It would appear from a recent article we wrote in a Spanish magazine that not many people are aware of the new Animal Welfare Law coming into Spain in the next few months so we thought it was a perfect time to write a blog post on the matter. The Law, for “Protección de los derechos y el bienestar de los animales” should be in force around the end of September 2023 and below we will discuss the content and requirements.

There are many different aspects to the Ley 7/2023, de 28 de marzo, de protección de los derechos y el bienestar de
los animales. In this post, we will mostly be discussing the obligations and requirements of dog owners. The Law isn’t just specific to dogs so at the end of this post, we will attach a link to the full BOE.

The most important factors that you need to know as the owners of our furry friends are as follows:

 1. You must complete a training course for dog ownership. The course will be free to take and remains valid indefinitely. For all new dog owners, this will be in advance however for current owners, you will have a two year period in which to complete the course retrospectively.

2. You must have public liability insurance in place. This will cover any third parties for any damages caused. Many people may have existing cover through another policy and InsureExpats.com are happy to run through those documents to confirm you’re covered. If however you don’t have existing cover in place, we would be happy to provide you a no obligation quote.

If you have any questions or would like us to give you a quote, you can always contact us. If you want to read the full Boletín Oficial Del Estado, you will find the link to it here: BOE
